Raoul Dufy
Raoul Dufy followed in the grand European tradition of such painters as Francois Boucher and Pablo Picasso in his output in nearly every medium and his embrace of the decorative arts. He balanced the inveterate French strain of classicism in his love for Poussin and particularly Claude Lorrain against the liberation of colour of the Fauves, with whom he associated after seeing Matisse's work in the 1905 Salon des Independants. In the 1910s he made woodcuts for book illustration, and co-founded a cloth printing workshop in which he produced watercolour designs for textiles. He designed ceramics, tapestries (including for the renowned Gobelins factory), architectural decorations, and stage sets.
